Should You Do Red Light Therapy at Home?

by Ebony Crown 26 Aug 2021

Red light therapy has been all the craze and with that many at-home tools promise to deliver professional grade treatment in the comfort of your home. So what is red light therapy? What are the benefits of it and how can you do red light therapy safely from your home?

What Is Red Light Therapy?

Red light therapy is a therapeutic skin treatment that uses LED (light-emitting diode) to deliver safe, concentrated wavelengths of red light into the skin where it's absorbed by your cells. Different wavelengths of the visible light spectrum - including blue, yellow, amber and red correspond to various LED light colors and penetrate the skin to different depths.

When your cells are treated with red light wavelengths, a multitude of reparative effects can occur, leading to potential benefits like increased collagen production, enhanced skin tone and a reduction in inflammation and redness.

What Does Red Light Therapy Treat?

Red light therapy is used to help stimulate the skin's ability to produce collagen - the protein in the skin that gives it its firmness, thickness which slows down as we get older. By stimulating the collagen in the skin you are left with smoother and more youthful skin.

But red light therapy isn't only for anti-aging. In fact it was developed by NASA to help astronauts with tissue repair and faster healing times. Red light therapy has been shown to also help reduce cellulite, links, wrinkles, sun damage and acne scars.

Can You Perform Red Light Therapy At Home?

According to dermatologists, at-home devices have less output than ones you would find at a derma's office making them safe for at=home use. Luckily with LED - it does not emit enough energy to burn your skin or discolor it. It's important to note that the at-home red light therapy device should disclosed the amount of LED lights and the exact penetration into the skin.

What Red Light Therapy Device Can You Use At Home?

While there are a full range of red light therapy devices the costs for these devices can go from $500 to a couple thousands.
